Luckily, Dan, there are more of US than there are of THEM. Speaking out again and again and again is all we can do. It's worth the pathetic attempts by some to diminish the call for compassion.

I'm so sorry you are receiving such harsh words. It's true that people say insulting things to others because they're filling some inadequate hole of their own. Loved reading your blog!

I hope you read those ridiculous comments and they bounced right off your awesome shell or fizzled on your warm soul. You rock! P.S. As George Carlin says, "Screw 'em!"
Sincerely,
Abbi

Your article on the Today web site has touched a lot of people -- including those of us who are directly affected, and those who aren't. These comments are proof that you had an impact. Thank you for standing up for the right thing and being part of the solution!

I just wanted to let you know your article posted to Today touched me greatly. My nephew has CP and Autism, and that word does indeed cut like a knife. I've deleted FB friends who wont stop using it, and it's fabulous that you, so articulately, wrote a wonderful piece that spelled out how much harm a single pejorative can do. I was shocked "that woman" chose to use it again. And then AGAIN her response.

Thank you. THANK YOU for being a voice for every single person that horrible word hurts.

I may be more shocked by the horrible comments directed at Dad. Lot of hate and ignorance in our world. Sad.

Some people have to clue about Individuals with disabilities. They think they may catch it or become it!! If they only knew they are missing out on some wonderful peopel who can change your life forever. I work in Adult day service with Individuals with disabilities and I love my job and couldn't work with a better group of loving, caring people.
